What are Kingdom Standings?
This system measures the status of a character among the people and the peerage of a Kingdom. Most Player Characters (PCs) start out in Neutral Standing with Kingdoms they do not belong to. PCs that belong to a Kingdom will be in good standing with that Kingdom, unless they belong to a Race, Religion or a Class that is looked down upon (e.g. a Diabolist in Gotterdammerung or a Reclaimer in Jotunbrud). In the latter case, that PC will begin the game with Neutral Standing with his own Kingdom.
As one ascends the tiers of Standing with a Kingdom, he or she is granted greater benefits with regard to that Kingdom: which means that a Kingdom may provide trainers, money or other awards for your loyal service.
Likewise, when a PC declines in a Kingdom’s eyes, he or she loses benefits and associations with the Kingdom become strained: merchants from that Kingdom charge you more and members of that Kingdom are discouraged from associating with you.
Ascent or Descent in Standing
Ascending the tiers is not a linear process. There are no Standing Points to gain or lose. Simply speaking, when a PC performs a heroic or villainous deed of great distinction and importance to a specific Kingdom, they will be informed of their gain or loss in Standing by a representative of that Kingdom.
Characters that do not belong to a Kingdom or those that are looked down upon in that Kingdom may ascend the ranks of their Standing. Their ascent may even change the perspective of a Kingdom accordingly as their renown colors the beliefs and the opinions of that Kingdom.
Can NPCs find out about my Kingdom Standing?
NPCs that belong to a Kingdom can ask a PC about his or her Standing with that Kingdom. For example, an NPC from the Bog Kingdom can ask a player character about his standing with the Fir’bolg and the player character must answer the question truthfully - this is a representation of the renown, notoriety or lack thereof that a PC has earned with a Kingdom during his adventures.
Can PCs find out about my Kingdom Standing?
Player characters can find out the truth of another PC’s Kingdom Standing, but only with regards to the questioner’s own Kingdom. This requires the invocation of the skills Lorekeeper or Rumormonger before asking a PC about his Kingdom Standing.
Generally speaking, PCs are freer than NPCs in the matter of their associations with others. Most Kingdoms will not penalize a PC that continually associates with PCs of other Kingdoms unless the person in question is in Anathemic Standing.
Once again, PCs are normally not bound to abide by the Standing system when it comes to their own interactions with other PCs – only in extreme cases will a Player Character be punished for associating with a specific Character because of the other Character’s Standing.
